A partnership between AEF and Moreland City Council has been named a finalist in the prestigious Premier’s Sustainability Awards. The Cooling Communities project has been nominated in the Environmental Justice category for reducing the effects of urban heat on social housing residents.

The project

Australian Energy Foundation and Moreland City Council undertook the Cooling Communities project to help mitigate Urban Heat Island Effect impacts on social housing residents – people who are particularly at risk from heat stress as they are more likely to live in poorly designed or maintained properties and have chronic health conditions.

The project involved residents and social housing providers in selecting which measures would be installed.

The result

The result was 10 social housing properties retrofitted with upgrades including insulation, draught-proofing, external shading, ceiling fans, split-system air-conditioning, green infrastructure (trees and vegetation), solar panels and rainwater harvesting tanks

Winners will be announced on Thursday 11 October.
